Mistake 1: Starting too late
The most common and most costly. Selective schools close registration up to a year before the exam. By the time some families start researching, key windows have shut. Fix: build your timeline 18–24 months out (see our admissions timeline guide).
Mistake 2: Applying to the wrong schools
Either over-reaching with an all-ambitious list, or choosing on name alone with no thought to fit. Fix: build a balanced shortlist of 4–8 schools — ambitious, matched and safer — chosen for how well each suits your child.
Mistake 3: Preparing for the wrong exam
Children drilled on the wrong format underperform on the day. GL, CEM and bespoke papers differ. Fix: confirm exactly which exam each target school sets, then prepare specifically for it.
Mistake 4: Neglecting the interview
Over-scripted answers and weak spoken English undermine strong candidates. Schools want genuine curiosity and conversation. Fix: practise talking naturally about interests and opinions, not reciting prepared lines.
Mistake 5: Underestimating English requirements
International applicants sometimes focus on maths and reasoning while underestimating the English level schools expect. Fix: prepare for the English assessment (often UKiset) early and build academic English steadily.
